Early Reading/ Phonics
Early reading - phonics
At St Michael’s Primary Academy we want all pupils to benefit from a consistent and systematic approach to the teaching of phonics from entry to school. We use Letters and Sounds to structure and deliver our teaching of phonics, alongside high-quality reading experiences, to ensure that every child becomes a reader.
Letters and Sounds is a systematic approach for teaching children to read using phonics. It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven.
We follow the Curriculum set out for each year group to structure and shape our teaching of early reading and follow Letter and Sounds to structure and deliver our phonics learning. Phonics is taught, following the Letters and Sounds structure, daily in our Foundation classes and our Year One classes. Further phonics lessons are planned and delivered in Year Two based on the needs of the pupils and their acquisition of both phonic knowledge and early reading skills.
