Curriculum Overview
At St Michael’s we follow the National Curriculum for all subjects. This was introduced in September 2014.
Phonics and reading:
Early Years – In the Reception classes practice is based around the Letters and Sounds Programme and the children begin to learn to read using the colour book bands.
Year 1 – In Year 1 this practice synergies with the National Curriculum and pupils continue to work through the colour book bands for reading.
Year 2 – In Year 2 practice turns more to a spelling focus and we use the Babcock programme “No Nonsense spelling”. For reading children continue with book bands until the colours end, at which point they take a Star Test and begin to use Accelerated Reader.
