Owls & Rabbits (Year 2)

Teachers: Miss Cox, Miss Lee, Mrs Rixon & Mrs Graydon

Teaching Assistants: Miss Jones, Miss Watson

Summer Term 2018

We started off the summer term by learning about animals. We really enjoyed a visit from Jack Zoo, where we came face to face with a giant cockroach, a pygmy hedgehog and an owl, to name but a few! We learnt a lot of interesting facts about animal classification, habitats and food chains, and are currently producing some amazing non-fiction books!

After half term we are going to be learning about how seaside holidays have changed in Devon. We will start with a trip to Exmouth, visiting the RNLI whilst we are there. We will be looking at seaside holidays then and now, focusing on Exmouth, Teignmouth and Dawlish.

Spring Term 2

This half term we will be learning about Roald Dahl and plants.  We started the half term by going on a school trip to Decoy Country Park.  There we learnt all about plants, trees and signs of Spring.  The children have been enjoying finding out about Roald Dahl and his characters.  They have been dressing up, making posters, leaflets and puppets.  They are looking forward to showing their learning to the children in Year 5.

Spring Term 1

This half term we have been learning about weather. We were lucky enough to have Mr and Mrs Palmer visit us from the Met Office! They taught us lots about how the weather is measured. After their visit we started off by learning about the seasons and then went on to learn about the weather in the UK. We have really enjoyed watching the weather forecasts with all of the storms going on and have been taking weather readings outside and recording our own weather diaries. We have had a go at recording our own weather forecasts in front of a green screen. We made our own wind socks and kites and have enjoyed testing them out. Next we are going to learn about hot and cold countries and we are very excited.

Autumn Term 2

This half term we have been learning about ‘The Great Fire of London’. We started off the topic with our own fire in the woodland area. We came up with adjectives to describe the fire and back in class learnt how to write expanded noun phrases and similes. Using our descriptive language, we wrote poems about what we could see and hear in the bonfire. Using our new research areas, we have been finding out facts about The Great Fire of London, such as when it started and why it spread. Each week we have been sharing our learning in different ways. Some of us have even created news reports and puppet shows. We are also learning how to create our own stop motion animations and are looking forward to sharing these at the end of our topic.

Autumn Term 1

We have had a great start to Year 2 with our topic, ‘How can we keep fit and healthy?’ Mr Upston came to visit us and taught us lots about the Olympics. He showed us the Olympic and Paralympic mascots and some of the clothes worn by Games Makers. Outside we tried out some different Olympic activities. Some were inspired by modern Olympic events and others by original games from the Ancient Olympics in Greece. We still have lots to look forward to this half term, including a visit from Warburton’s to teach us about having a healthy, balanced diet and we will celebrate the end of our topic by organising our very own mini Olympics!
